The Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative (SMEC) is continuing work on a new Substation near the Northeast Technology Park (NTP) and the Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) campus. The 161/12.4 KV Substation will serve customers in the area, including NACC, as well as providing power to any industry that may locate in the Northeast Technology Park.
Some 100 acres in the Technology Park have been certified as an Alabama AdvantageSite for Development by the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, and the Tennessee Valley Authority has designated the 100 acres as a Primary Data Center Site that is ready for development.
The DeKalb County and Jackson County EDAs led this effort. The site also is served by Farmers Telecommunications and CenturyTel. Farmers is capable of providing 10 Gigs of broadband to the site, which can serve the needs of Tier 3 and 4 data centers.
The Substation is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2018.
