Joan Tucker, Instructor of English and Yearbook Sponsor at Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC), has been chosen as the Dr. Charles M. Pendley Founders’ Chair Most Outstanding Faculty Member for 2015-2016. The announcement was made recently by the Founders’ Chair Committee at a college luncheon.
Dr. David Campbell, President of NACC, welcomed guests to the luncheon honoring Tucker. He said, “Welcome everyone to the 2015-16 Founders Chair Award for the Most Outstanding Faculty Member at Northeast Alabama Community College. As I have said many times before instruction and our faculty are the heart of Northeast. Instruction is our mission--it’s what we are all about. We are so fortunate to have such an outstanding faculty here at Northeast that accomplish that mission for the college. We like to recognize one each year for their work and there’s a committee that’s been doing this for a number of years. The committee consists of Lora Mae Davis (chair), Joyce Kennamer, Pat Freeman, and Kathy Cook. Kathy was unable to attend today. They have been presenting this award for 31 years. They always make an excellent selection. This award started out being sponsored by the Secretarial Association. In time, the NACC Foundation has taken it over and provides the $500 stipend. We appreciate that and thank Heather Rice, NACC Development Director, and the Foundation for supporting this award. I will let Lora Mae take over and make the announcement for this year.”
Lora Mae Davis, Chair of the Founders’ Chair Committee, said, “It’s good to be with you on such a beautiful day. First of all, the committee would like to congratulate Northeast for earning the honor as one of the nation’s top 150 community colleges. This honor makes Northeast eligible to compete for the 2017 Aspen Prize for community college excellence. Your contributions, over the years, certainly deserve congratulations for a job well done. The outstanding leadership, faculty, staff and students, working together for a better future along with your dedication, loyalty and desire to achieve the very best will help Northeast reach the nation’s number one community college. Thank you for caring and making this honor possible for our area and we are looking forward to an even greater honor in 2017.
Each year our committee looks forward to the nominations from the faculty and students for the Founders’ Chair Award. These nominations help us in the selection of a faculty member deserving recognition. The award comes with a cash stipend, honor at graduation, and name placed on a plaque displayed in the college. This year’s recipient has given eight years of service to Northeast as English Instructor and Yearbook Sponsor, and meets the criteria outlined for this award. It is my pleasure to announce Joan Tucker as the outstanding faculty member for 2015-2016.”
Davis added, “We would like to thank Dr. Campbell, his assistant Brenda Stringer, Dr. Joe Burke, and his assistant Angie Stewart for all their support and participation in this program. A special thanks to SGA President, Caroline Spigner for her help. Caroline, we wish you the very best and a successful future. In addition, thanks to Debra Barrentine for keeping us informed of activities and the promotion of Northeast.”
Tucker has been at Northeast since 2008. She holds a B.A. degree from Jacksonville State University and a M.A. degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She is an English Instructor and Yearbook Sponsor. Upon accepting the award, she said, “I want to thank all of my colleagues, my students, the administration and staff, and the Founders’ Chair Committee. I am so lucky to get to wake up every day and come to this campus, and this award reminds me that Northeast Alabama Community College appreciates the hard work all the faculty do. I am incredibly thankful to be the recipient of this honor, and I look forward to the rest of my career here.”
Campbell expressed congratulations to Tucker. “We are very proud of her.” He then acknowledged some of the past winners of the Founders Chair who were present. They included himself (first recipient of the award), Joan Reeves, Greg Millican, Mark Webb, Daphne Wilkerson, Kevin Holt, Rodney Land, Misty Chapman, Brent Satterfield, Sam Dobbs, and Tonie Niblett. “We are very proud to have you all here today. There would be 31 in all.” He also acknowledged the Presidential Hosts who represent the college at all sorts of events. Present today were Ben Kirby of Valley Head, Alex Laroye-Westlake of Fort Payne, Chelsea Dunn of Sylvania, and Haiyden Dobbs of Fyffe. “Andrea Okwu is the sponsor of the Presidential Hosts and does a great job,” he added. “Chasley Bellomy our event planner did all of the decorations and planning for today’s event. Good job with that, Chasley. LuAnne Hastings is our chef for today. When she prepares lunch for us I know it will always be good.” Following an invocation by Dr. Joe Burke, Vice President/Dean of Instruction, lunch was served in honor of Tucker.
