Northeast Alabama Community College (Northeast) Foundation recently received funds for a new scholarship that will be awarded to Valley Head High School seniors planning to attend Northeast Alabama Community College. Charlean Smith made a donation in memory of her husband Mr. Donald “Cleo” Smith. The Cleo Smith Scholarship is a one-time gift of $500.00, and can be used toward tuition or books. Valley Head High School seniors need to fill out the application and include a one page essay and a letter of recommendation. For more details on the application you can visit www.nacc.edu. The recipient is eligible to receive $500.00 for their second semester at Northeast with a 3.5 GPA and full-time registration status at the end of their first semester.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith have always lived in Mentone, Alabama, and Mr. Smith was very well known for his beautiful gardens. Mr. Smith retired from Sara Lee Bakery (Earthgrains) in Fort Payne. Mrs. Smith said that her husband had worked only three jobs his whole life and never missed a day of work. He grew up during the hard times of the 1930s, and was raised on a farm. “He knew an education was very important for him and knew the importance of children having an opportunity to further their education,” stated Mrs. Smith. She hopes that this scholarship will help a student reach their educational goals.
