Second year nursing students at Northeast Alabama Community College are eligible to apply for the David and Laura Henegar Nursing Scholarship which has recently been established. The scholarship is in memory of Laura and in honor of David Henegar both from Henagar, Alabama. Mrs. Henegar passed away in 2016 and Mr. Henegar just celebrated his 95th birthday in April.
The scholarship has been established by Rachel and Peter Mehravari who both live and work for the federal government in Washington DC. They are funding the $1,500 scholarship to a 2nd year nursing student at Northeast. This scholarship will be awarded to one 2nd year nursing student for fall 2017.
“We chose the nursing program primarily because my grandmother saw it as such a positive option for local students – one she benefited from firsthand during several stays at hospitals during her life – but also because we identify strongly with their ethos of service to others, and because there is such a shortage of qualified nurses nationwide,” said Rachel Mehravari. “We decided if we could do something small to honor both my grandmother and help with these broader issues, we absolutely would.”
The nursing program is an integral part of Northeast. The nursing curriculum combines general education and nursing education courses. Graduates of the associate degree program are eligible to apply to the State Board of Nursing to take the National Council Licensure Examination leading to licensure as a registered nurse (RN). The nursing faculty strive to produce graduates capable of self-direction, who are willing to assume responsibility and accountability for their practice in the health care delivery system.
“We are so pleased to be able to honor my grandparents, David and Laura Henegar, in supporting the hard-working nursing students at Northeast Alabama Community College. My grandmother in particular was very proud of the high-quality education available in her community and of the fantastic work these students go on to do.”
“This scholarship the Mehravari’s are funding is a generous donation, and I know will help a deserving nursing student with funds to have a successful 2nd year. So many of the great nurses that serve our community in your doctors’ offices, hospitals and nursing homes come from Northeast’s nursing program,” stated Heather Rice, NACC Development Director.
