You’ve heard the saying a dog is “man’s best friend” but how about a dog being a best friend to an entire college?
Northeast Alabama Community College is considered “home” to many. Faculty, staff, students and friends of the college will tell you the college is a family environment. Northeast has become a special home to a very special dog named Roscoe. Roscoe has many friends on campus. You might see him hitching a ride with some of our maintenance staff or running along behind them in their service carts. You might see him escorting folks from building to building. You might see him greeting visitors while on campus tours. Most of the time you will find him at the Pendley Administration building, with his number one human, Dr. David Campbell, NACC President. Dr. Campbell, is known for having a huge heart for animals. Roscoe may be outside the building or sometimes in the President’s office, but he is always waiting patiently for Dr. Campbell’s arrival. Being around the two of them together, you will pick up rather quickly that Roscoe loves Dr. Campbell as much as Dr. Campbell loves Roscoe.
About five years ago, Roscoe would come and go from the college. He was a neighborhood dog, and some of the other families he visited stated that he was a “free spirit”. He started staying more and more at the college. After checking with the neighborhood and making sure it was ok for Roscoe to be at the college so much, Dr. Campbell started feeding him. Dr. Campbell also pays for a veterinarian to come out and give him his shots and make sure he is healthy. “We will put him in the shop in case of bad weather, and many of our faculty and staff help look out for him,” stated Dr. Campbell. “Mrs. Amy LaCount, NACC office administration instructor, bought him a dog house. He starts his day early with our maintenance staff opening up our buildings and classrooms. He will go through every classroom with them.” Dr. Campbell also added that the students know him by name and he seems like a therapy dog. “He is a very happy dog and may help with the stress of school and work!”
If you have visited the campus, been to an event on campus or you follow Northeast on social media, you have seen Roscoe. The Northeast Alabama Community College Foundation is helping Roscoe raise money for scholarships for NACC students. “Roscoe wants to give back to the college and the students that love him and take care of him, stated Heather Rice, NACC Development Director. “He is very happy to be considered the campus dog, and now thinks he is famous featured on his own t-shirt. For more information about ordering a shirt, please contact Heather Rice at 256.638.4418 or 256.228.6001, ext. 2301 or by email email@example.com.
