Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) hosted more than 60 campers at its Summer Robotics Camp in July. Sponsored by Google, the Robotics Camp introduced rising 7^th-8^th grade students to the world of engineering and mechatronics through a hands-on building project. 

The camp challenged students to build a remote-controlled robot, assembling the robot from scratch. In the afternoon, students learned to operate their robot and participated in races around the college’s new Workforce Skills Training Center. Campers from across NACC’s service area of DeKalb and Jackson counties, plus several students from distant counties were in attendance.

“This is a great opportunity for these students to delve into the world of robotics,” stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell.” “They made their own small robot! The experience was made possible by a grant from Google, and Google employees came out and worked directly with students in building and operating the robots. I can’t say enough about how fortunate we are having one of the world’s leading technology companies right on our own back yard! Thanks to our Workforce Dean, Mrs. Barbara Kilgore for organizing this event and conducting the training!”

The college would like to thank Google for all the assistance they provided to this event. From sponsoring the camp financially to their staff volunteering time at the camp, this event would not have been possible without their support. Volunteers also served as mentors to campers, assisting the students in building and testing their robots. One Google volunteer said he was grateful to work for a company that values community engagement and encourages employees to invest in educational opportunities for local students.

NACC’s Dean of Workforce Development and Skills Training Barbara Kilgore had a front-row seat to the students’ experiences at this year’s Robotics Camp. “This camp offers a perfect opportunity for local students to explore their interests in robotics and other STEM fields, like Mechatronics. In addition to building their own robots, students received lunch, snacks, and camp T-shirts while participating in activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire future interest in technology-related careers.
