Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) received four awards at the Alabama Community College System Public Relations Association (ACCSPRA) 2016 Conference held recently in Orange Beach. Northeast won one top Pyramid Award and three 2nd place Awards of Achievement. During the conference, the Pyramid Awards ceremony recognized two-year college marketing items created and/or used during 2015.
NACC won a top Pyramid Award in the Electronic Publications Category for its Mobile App. Debra Barrentine, Director of Promotions and Marketing works with Zach Jones of Ascend Web Development on the App for the college. The App is provided free for downloading. “We are so thrilled that our Mobile App won this top award,” said Barrentine. “We are also excited that our App is currently being upgraded. Watch for all of the new features, such as voice commands, and news about this upgrade coming very soon.”
The new website for Northeast won an Award of Achievement in the Websites Category. Patricia Combs, Educational Technology Director worked on the project together with the NACC Website and Social Media Committee. “We are so pleased and delighted that our website has been recognized by the ACCSPRA. Our goal was to modernize our website to be visually pleasing, easily navigated, responsive and mobile friendly,” said Combs. “We look forward to continuing to add new features to enhance the experience our students and communities have while visiting the NACC website.”
NACC won an Award of Achievement in the Viewbook Category for the “Begin Your Future Here!” viewbook which was created for recruiting high school students. Andrea Okwu, Coordinator of High School Relations/Recruiting, and Barrentine worked on the project together with WordSouth in Rainsville. “The viewbook is always a great tool to inform students of what we offer at NACC, and I am very pleased to know that ours was selected as one of the best in the state,” stated Okwu.
The College Recruiting Video also won an Award of Achievement in the College Promotional Video Category. “In our video, we feature students speaking about their experience at NACC and we use it in our schools and community,” explained Okwu. “This is a perfect opportunity to showcase a true example of how much our students are pleased with their college choice. I’m honored that ACCSPRA recognizes the benefits of this video for our recruitment.” Okwu credited videographer Phil Woodall for his work on the video as well.
"We have some very talented people here at Northeast, as these awards show," stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. "Their work they do is very important in letting our community find out about the opportunities at the college."
Barrentine attended the ACCSPRA annual conference. The theme was “ACCSPRA—Painting the Picture!” Featured speakers included Dr. Karla K. Gower, Professor in the Advertising and Public Relations Department of the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama and Director of the Plank Center for Leadership in PR, and Dr. Pam Cox-Otto, CEO of Interact Communications. Recruiting, retaining, and managing millennials was discussed.
The mission of ACCSPRA is to enhance the image, strengthen and promote awareness and public perception of the Alabama Community College System. Barrentine is a past president of ACCSPRA. “I always enjoy attending this annual conference and I brought back some really great ideas. We always have incredible speakers and I was glad to spend time with my peers,” said Barrentine.
