Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) received eleven awards at the Alabama Community College System Public Relations Association (ACCSPRA) 2019 Conference held recently in Orange Beach. Northeast won two top Pyramid Awards, four Awards of Achievement, and five Awards of Merit. During the conference, the Pyramid Awards ceremony recognized two-year college marketing items created and/or used during the last year.
“It is extremely important that we communicate and inform our students and community about what is going on here at Northeast,” stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. “Not only does this help inform everyone about the great opportunities they can have here, but our talented faculty and staff create messages that are educational just in themselves. I am very proud of our people for winning these ACCSPRA Awards!”
The NACC Mobile App won a top Pyramid Award in the Mobile App category. “Zach Jones and his staff at Rekrewt continue to do such an outstanding job with our Mobile App,” said Debra A. Barrentine, Director of Promotions and Marketing. “I can’t say enough good things about Rekrewt. Every project they do is excellent in every way.”
NACC won a top Pyramid Award for the Recruitment Video in the Video Advertisement/PSA category. Coordinator of High School Relations and Recruiting Andrea Okwu said of the work put into the Recruitment Video, “We always want to show our audience and potential students a real story of how our students are experiencing NACC life. We work closely with Phil Woodall and his staff at The Library Of to produce such a moving production to showcase when we visit high schools to recruit. They are very gifted in their talents of providing us with such professional films.”
The 2019 Commencement Program won an Award of Achievement in the Specialty Publications Category. Barrentine worked with BPI Media to complete this project. “Angie Stewart, Administrative Assistant to the Vice President/Dean of Instruction, provided the bulk of the information for this commencement program and the people at BPI did an outstanding job of designing/printing it,” said Barrentine.
A Workforce Development Video entitled “NACC Helps Local Company Fill Employment Gap” won an Award of Achievement in the Video Advertisement/PSA category. This video, produced by the Alabama Community College System’s Communications Department featured a Registered Apprenticeship partnership between the college and Newman Technology, Inc. that is helping to fill jobs with qualified workers. “We are very appreciative of the partnership we have with Newman Technology and other companies in our area to place students in Registered Apprenticeships and other work experiences to assure that our students have the experience they need to succeed in the workplace,” stated Dr. Mike Kennamer, Dean of Workforce Development. “I am also appreciative of the work of ACCS Media Producer Clinton Bourgeois for the excellent work he has done in documenting this partnership.”
NACC also won an Award of Achievement in the Brochure Category for the EMS Brochure. The Office of Workforce Development at NACC secured the services of BPI Media Group of Boaz to design and print various publications around the Workforce Development Division’s theme of Opportunity. “We are pleased with the quality of the design and printing that BPI Media Group does for us,” stated Kennamer. “The promotional pieces fit with the criteria developed by the NACC Office of Promotions and Marketing and are set apart with the Opportunity theme.”
The Aurora Literary Magazine won an Award of Achievement in the Student Publications category. “Receiving this award validates the work we do in student publications,” said Joan Reeves, Co-Sponsor of the Aurora Literary Magazine. “In addition to the publication of the works of talented NACC students and artists, our literary journal continues to serve as a recruitment tool for the college through the publication of the winning entries from the middle/high school writing competition. Co-Sponsors English instructor, Jeff Hawes, and Art instructor, Barbara Kilgore are to be commended for their contributions to this process.” Reeves is also an Instructor of English/Director of Division of English and Fine Arts/Director of Student Activities.
The NACC Truck Driving Logo won an Award of Merit in the Logo Design category. This logo was created by Hannah Crawford, Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Workforce Development. “Mrs. Crawford is highly skilled in graphic design and did an excellent job creating a logo for our CDL program,” stated Kennamer. “The logo is an adaption of the college logo, with the NACC mascot, the Mustang.”
The 2019-2020 NACC Catalog/Student Handbook won an Award of Merit in the Catalog category. “I am very pleased that our college catalog was chosen as one of the best,” stated Barrentine. “It takes months of work to complete, but with the right people helping which includes Precision Graphics, who printed the catalogs, and BPI Media, who designed the front cover. Olivia Dodd, Assistant to the Director of Institutional Planning and Assessment at Northeast, was also instrumental in getting the catalog completed.”
The news release and photos of Roscoe, the NACC Campus Dog, won an Award of Merit in the category of News Placement. “Roscoe is a famous ambassador on our campus,” said Barrentine. “He is loved by students and faculty/staff, as well as visitors.”
The Theatre Brochure, Imagine Innovate Inspire, won an Award of Merit in the Brochure Category. Kayleigh Smith, Director of the Theatre said, "NACC Theatre strives for excellence in everything we do, and that includes communicating about the many ways we engage with the public. It is an honor to receive this award for our theater brochure!"
The We Still Want You to Join the NACC Family postcard won an Award of Merit in the Direct Mail Piece/Postcard Category.
Okwu attended the ACCSPRA annual conference. The theme was “Staying Afloat – Effectively Navigating People and Workflow.” Featured speakers included Khadish Franklin, of the Education Advisory Board and Glenn Shepard, of Glenn Shepard Seminars.
