Northeast Alabama Community College’s Summer Youth Theatre Workshop celebrated its 12th year in July! Forty youths ranging in age from 10 to 15 received hands-on experience in the college’s renowned Theatre Department at the workshop, which consisted of five days of intense theatre curriculum, including play production, acting, improvisation, and dance.
Each day began with vocal and body warm-ups, followed by an ensemble session, and concluded with individual sessions with teachers. Four Northeast theatre students and six community volunteers worked with the youth each day. The NACC students were Allison Dixon, Rylee Hancock, Andrew Holderfield, and Paige McGullion. Community volunteers included Faith Bonitz, Hope Bonitz, Kayleigh Smith, Holden Wynn, Connor White, and Holly Elmore.
Regan McClung, Theatre Office Manager, directed the camp and coordinated all activities. The students and teachers completed the week with a show complete with performances from each group, as well as a dance number, which was choreographed by former NACC theatre student, Kayleigh Smith.
"Mrs. McClung and our staff do a wonderful job with this workshop," stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. "With this workshop, we provide another venue for the arts in our area, and indeed many of the students who have participated have gone on to be involved in our plays at Northeast. We like to think we have helped establish an art culture for theatre here, just as is done with any other successful activity."
NACC Theatre’s upcoming productions will be Peter and the Starcatcher, Shrek, the Musical, and Almost, Maine. We hope to see all of you “at the theatre”! Seating is reserved, and all tickets are $5.00. For more information, contact the Theatre Department at 256-638-4418 or 256-228-6001, ext. 2218.
