The Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) Men’s Soccer program will make history this week as it takes the field for the college’s first intercollegiate soccer match. This milestone marks an exciting new chapter for NACC as it expands its athletic offerings that currently include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s softball, and Esports.
The Mustangs will kick off their season on August 22 in Mississippi facing Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers.
The addition of a men’s soccer program is another fulfillment of NACC President Dr. David Campbell’s vision for the future of Northeast Athletics. “We are very excited about the start of NACC Mustang Soccer,” stated Dr. Campbell. “We have championship coaches working with some of the best players in our area. We are anticipating great things for our program! We are very proud to add soccer to our athletic program for our students and the community!”
Under the leadership of Head Coach Tom Shanklin and Assistant Coach Steve Cornelius, the Mustangs are prepared for their inaugural season with a roster of talented players representing communities across Alabama.
“I’m very thankful to Dr. Campbell and the administration at Northeast for all they have done to make this soccer program a reality!” said Coach Shanklin. “Our athletes have worked extremely hard to prepare for the inaugural season. We finally get to step on the pitch on Thursday as a team, and I couldn’t be more proud to be able to experience it with this group.”
NACC Athletic Director Jimmy Kolaitis is also ready to see the program kickoff the season. “Dr. Campbell’s vision is finally a reality, and we are excited to get the first match under our belt,” said Kolaitis. “These young men have been working extremely hard, and I know they are ready to start competing.”
While NACC’s new soccer facility is currently under construction on campus, the Mustangs are grateful to the Fort Payne community for stepping in to provide a temporary home. All home matches this season will be played at the Fort Payne Sportsplex, thanks to the generosity and support of local leaders.
