On October 19, the Northeast Alabama Community College Student Government Association celebrated Collegiate Alcohol Awareness by sponsoring a “Mocktail Competition.” Organizations on campus were asked to create their own version of a non-alcoholic drink.
Participating in this event illustrating how college students can have fun responsibly were representatives of the following organizations: Sigma Kappa Delta, Phi Theta Kappa, Christian Campus Ministries, Mu Alpha Theta, Skills USA, Presidential Hosts, Miss NACC, the Music Department, and the Student Government Association. The Presidential Hosts display also promoted another program sponsored by the SGA, Breast Cancer Awareness. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the SGA is selling t-shirts to raise money to send to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.
Joan Reeves, Director of Student Activities, noted, “As mentors for our students it is our responsibility to show college students that their peers are not all making bad decisions. Students want to fit in and follow campus norms. We have a responsibility to tell students that making healthy choices is the true norm. Then, we can begin changing public perception. We want to empower our students to take responsibility for their own decisions. The involvement of the Northeast student body in these activities shows their commitment to service projects sponsored by the college.”
