On March 21st-24th, Sigma Kappa Delta (SKD) officers and English faculty from Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio, to attend the International English Honor Society’s annual convention. Students from NACC heard keynote speakers, Cristina Henríquez and Mary Norris, discuss their connection to literature and personal freedom. The students also were able to attend panel discussions in which fellow SKD members and sponsors from around the country spoke on the same topic. Jeff Hawes, NACC English Instructor and SKD sponsor, served on two panels at the conference—“Literacy=Freedom” and “Nurturing Freedom in the Classroom” while Joan Reeves, Chair of the English and Fine Arts Division and SKD Sponsor/ National Vice-President moderated one of the panels.
Toward the conclusion of the convention, NACC was recognized multiple times at the SKD awards luncheon. Ms. Reeves commented, “I am so proud of all of our students and staff who make this Aurora, NACC’s literary magazine, was named Most Outstanding Literary Magazine in the nation. Jennifer Fant, SKD Treasurer, placed 3rd in Black and White Photography. Lindsay Higdon, SKD President, was awarded the Dr. Don Perkins Service Scholarship, and Juan Contreras, SKD Secretary, received the Ms. Joan S. Reeves Service Scholarship.
