Debra A. Barrentine, Director of Promotions and Marketing at Northeast Alabama Community College has been named the 2017 Alabama Community College System Public Relations Association’s Communicator of the Year. The announcement was made at ACCSPRA’s Annual Conference recently in Orange Beach, Alabama.
The presentation was made by Shondae Brown, Coordinator of College Relations at Southern Union State Community College and past President of ACCSPRA. The plaque reads: “ACCSPRA 2017 Communicator of the Year Award in recognition of a special level of leadership, ability or innovation in marketing, public relations, communication, or recruiting.”
Barrentine is a past president of ACCSPRA and has been a member for over 21 years. NACC has consistently won awards each year at the Pyramid Awards ceremony during the annual conference, including top Pyramids and a Best of Show.
Her entire professional career has been at Northeast with the last 15 years being Director of Promotions and Marketing. “I will be the first one to say that NACC is so lucky and fortunate to have a President (Dr. David Campbell) who supports marketing 100%,” she said. “If something new and innovative comes along in marketing, he is open to trying it and supports it.” Such as, NACC was the first two-year college in the ACCS to launch a mobile App (2010-11). The App was recently upgraded and has new features such as voice search.
“Mrs. Barrentine is multi-talented in all forms of communication, whether it is spoken, written, or digital,” said Dr. David Campbell, NACC President. “As the college’s Marketing Director, we have seen NACC grow tremendously in enrollment and in prestige within the community. Results are what counts most in any job, and Mrs. Barrentine has certainly obtained them through all the work that she has done and continues to do.” He added, “Mrs. Barrentine has demonstrated excellence in all her work throughout her career. She is a true professional and one of those individuals that every organization wants working for them.”
Barrentine is also a member of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. NACC marketing efforts have been recognized consistently over the years by the national Collegiate Advertising Awards program and the Higher Educational Advertising Awards program.
“This is truly an honor to be named Communicator of the Year for ACCSPRA,” said Barrentine. “I am so thankful to be a part of such a great group of peers across the state. I am also so grateful to Dr. Campbell for giving me the opportunities he has over the years. I get to get up every workday and go to a job that I truly enjoy and love. I am blessed.”
Barrentine is married to Mark L. Barrentine, Assistant District Administrator for the Department of Transportation in Dutton, and they reside in Rosalie, Alabama.
