Changes are coming to the Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) campus this summer. Under a plan approved by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees, two of the older buildings on campus will be demolished, the third floor of a newer building will be renovated to house the English Department, and the Learning Resources Center will be slightly altered to make room for the Psychology Department. 

"All this is part of the campus Master Plan that we have devised with our System's Facilities Director Mark Salmon," stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. "The buildings being demolished are actually mothballed now and are ready to come down. The buildings have served us well, but they are now inefficient to use. We'll expand our Quad where these buildings are, and make it a beautiful Central Park-like area."

The third floor of the college's STEM Building (Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Technology) will be finished out to house the English Department. "Our English Department deserves this," Campbell stated. "The area will be state-of-the-art with classrooms, offices, a writing lab, a reception/study area, and the latest educational technology."

Eventually the college plans to demolish all the first buildings on campus (1965) and replace them with a new Student Center facing the Quad. "We are still trying to put the funding together for that," Campbell said. "I don't know when it will be started!"

The NACC Foundation is working on a project to sell bricks from the Social Science Building and to engrave the name of the buyer on them to form a commemorative display on campus. "Thousands of students have had classes in that building since 1965," Campbell said. "Our Foundation thought that this brick display with their names engraved would be a good memory for them."

The 3.5-million-dollar project is being financed by funds appropriated by the Legislature that NACC did not spend on the college's Workforce Center. "Our Workforce staff saved money on that building by getting equipment through outside grants," Campbell said.

Tolar Construction, a local company, are contractors on the project, and the architects are Seay, Seay, and Litchfield. Campbell especially thanked the Northeast personnel who were instrumental in designing and planning this project, including Barbara Kilgore, Chad Gorham, Joan Reeves, Kent Jones, Rodney Bone, Julia Everett and Brenda Stringer. "All this was a team effort involving many of our staff," Campbell said. "I think our students and community will be pleased with the results."
