The Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) Foundation Board hosted its annual Holiday Gala on Friday, December 11th, in the William M. Beck Health & Fine Arts Building. With the change of location the event doubled its table sales, and there were more than 400 people present that enjoyed NACC’s own Chorus and the NACC Alumni Jazz Band with dance floor! Most people will know this location as the gym, however, you would not have known it was a gym the night of the event. “With beautiful fabric draped across the ceiling, curtains of fabric on the sides, well-designed lighting by James Seymour with Full Cue Productions, and a lighted tree as a chandelier, the gym was transformed into a beautiful holiday gala extravaganza,” stated Heather Rice, NACC Development Director.
Dr. David Campbell, NACC President, had approved renovations to the gym throughout the year in preparation for this event including the concession stand being transformed into a full working kitchen, new glass doors entering the gym from the lobby and other cosmetic changes. “Our Foundation sponsored Holiday Gala was just an exceptional event this year,” stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. “Foundation board members and Mrs. Heather Rice did an outstanding job planning the event and the decorations, by Mrs. Julise Clement, were wonderful. All efforts were for a great cause as well--scholarships for our students. We are already looking forward to next year’s Gala.”
This year the Foundation honored Mr. John B. Lyda, Manager of Operation, Claims Administration, of Blue Cross Blue Shield in Birmingham, Alabama as NACC Alumnus of the Year. Lyda attended NACC in 1992 and 1993, transferred to the University of Alabama and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. He also holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Lyda also serves as a council member for the Hoover City Council. He is married to Beth Kirkland and they have two children, Anna Kate and Griffin. Lyda’s parents are John and Sonja Lyda of Flat Rock.
The NACC Foundation Holiday Gala honors an alumnus each year from DeKalb or Jackson County. Pictures from the night of the event will soon be available by visiting our website at www.nacc.edu. Foundation event funds are used for NACC student scholarships and to support the mission of the college.
