How do you apply for VA Educational Benefits?

  • First you must determine if you are eligible for federal, state, or both benefits.
  • To apply for federal benefits please visit https://www.va.gov/education/how-to-apply/ and look under the "How do I apply?" section.
  • There are two state benefits: Alabama GI Dependent Scholarship and Alabama National Guard Educational Assistance Program (ANGEAP).
    • To apply for the Alabama GI Dependent Scholarship, you will need to contact your local Veterans’ Affairs office for assistance (Fort Payne: 256-845-8572) (Scottsboro: 256-259-1411).
    • To apply for ANGEAP, please download the current application from this website https://www.ache.edu/index.php/military-educational-benefits/ under the Military Educational Benefits tab.

Documentation Needed for federal VA Educational Benefits:

  1. Copy of DD214
  2. Copy of Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
  3. Completed electronic request for certification VA Request for Certification of Education Benefits Form
  4. All transcripts are Required - other college and military transcripts. Request military transcripts at https://jst.doded.mil/official.html

Federal VA benefits: The first step toward receiving Federal VA benefits is to complete the online application at http://www.va.gov/education/ (Click on “How to apply” – you will be prompted to create a username and password; simply follow the directions as shown and submit your application). All correspondence from VA will be to the address you list on the application. As soon as you receive the “Certificate of Eligibility”, please bring a copy to the Financial Aid office together with your DD214 or NOBE. At this time your VA file will be created and you are ready to register for classes! The key to receiving your benefits is bringing a copy of your class schedule each semester to the Financial Aid office.

State VA benefits: When your eligibility is confirmed for the Alabama GI Dependent Scholarship, you and the Financial Aid Office will receive a Certificate of Entitlement from the Montgomery office. At this point, the key to receiving your benefits is bringing a copy of your class schedule each semester to the Financial Aid office. For ANGEAP, you will need to complete the application (each semester) on the website https://www.ache.edu/index.php/military-educational-benefits/  under the Military Educational Benefits tab and turn it into the Financial Aid Office.
