Northeast Alabama Community College provides distance
education through online Internet courses. To take these
courses, students must meet all prerequisites for the course,
have basic keyboarding skills, and have access to a computer off
campus or in an on-campus computer lab.
Beginning Fall 2007, online classes will use Blackboard
technology. For more information, see
Blackboard Instructions.
Technical Requirements
In order to take online classes, a student must have access to
active Internet connection with an Internet service provider and
a functional browser. Broadband (high speed) connections are
preferred but not required. Classes will work with dial-up
connections but the student may experience a lower level of
performance. Lab and library computers with high speed
connections are available on campus for students who do not have
an adequate Internet connection at home or are experiencing
problems with their home equipment.
Example of a minimum PC for online classes:
Windows 98 or later, Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, 56K modem
or other Internet access capability, CDROM, 1.2GB hard drive or
greater, Pentium III processor or equivalent, and 64 MB RAM and
an Internet Service Provider (ISP) connection.
Technical staff at Northeast College have tested online classes
for satisfactory performance with a computer equipped as above.
Students may use computers with other operating systems,
Internet browsers, or hardware with the understanding that the
college does not provide technical support nor guarantee
satisfactory performance of class software.
Northeast College utilizes servers and software provided by
textbook publishers for most online classes. Northeast College
does not control these servers and additional hardware or
software requirements or limitations may apply. Individual
classes may have specific hardware or software requirements in
addition to basic connectivity. If you have questions about
specific classes, consult your class syllabus, contact your
instructor, or contact the office of educational technology
support at extension 309.
Internet Content
Internet courses meet the same standards of quality of those
offered in classroom instruction on campus. Each course provides
opportunities for interaction with the instructor. Students will
be given information on the logistics of accessing and
participating in the online course at an initial orientation
session conducted by the instructor.
Library Resources
The NACC Learning Resources Center provides online resources for
off-campus students and instructors, described on this page:
http://www.nacc.edu/library/distance_learning.htm
Expectations for Students
Students will be expected to complete Internet courses within
the semester time frame that they enrolled for the course.
Students are advised that Internet courses demand good
self-motivation habits and persistence in completing
assignments.
Registration Procedures
Registration procedures for distance learning courses will be
the same as for regular on campus courses.
Contact the Office of Admissions or Dean of Instruction for
further information.
