NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE

Northeast Alabama Community College demonstrates compliance in the engagement of faculty in ongoing professional development. Goal Four of the college mission includes the provision for professional development opportunities for faculty. Instructors are afforded professional development opportunities through workshops scheduled both locally and by the Alabama College System. In addition, faculty receive strong support for independent professional development activities undertaken individually or with colleagues, as encouraged by State Board of Education Policy 612.01 and evidenced by approved leave requests and faculty reports of individual professional development activities (Table 5).

Professional development days are identified within the college calendar.  A total of five days are scheduled for academic year 2003-2004.  Five to eight days have been scheduled yearly over the past decade (Table 1).  Both local and Alabama College System professional development programs are consistently represented. System professional development is coordinated by the Alabama College Association (ACA) and conducted at a centralized location, such as Birmingham. Workshop topics offered by ACA for November 2003 included Reaffirmation of Accreditation, ADHD in Adults, Adult Basic Education, Retention, Distance Education Programs, Teaching Using Technology, The One-Stop Career Center, Improving Student Outcomes, Planning College Events, and Career Training.

The college Professional Development Committee, charged with designing local professional development programs, was initiated during the 2002-2003 academic year (Table 2). Prior to the inception of this committee, local activities were planned by administrative personnel. The Professional Development Committee, chaired by a faculty member, includes six faculty members, both academic and technical, as well as one representative each from administration and staff. In making plans for upcoming activities, the committee takes into account the current needs of faculty as well as the faculty evaluation of the previous year’s activities (Table 4). As a result of excellent planning, the committee has coordinated a technology fair and workshops on Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and e-mail management (Table 3).

During Fall Semester 2003-2004, planning efforts of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Development Committee led to the institution’s membership in the National Association of Developmental Education, including individual memberships for the members of the QEP committee as well as the college president, Dr. David Campbell. Two faculty members will attend the 2004 NADE conference scheduled for March 10-14 in St. Louis. In addition, three faculty members joined the Alabama Association of Developmental Education and attended the annual conference held November 5-7, 2003, in Mobile. The QEP committee worked with the college Professional Development Committee to organize a workshop about the PLATO Learning System, which is under consideration as a component of the QEP, the focus of which is the creation of a program for the promotion of success of students in developmental studies.
