NARRATIVE/JUSTIFICATION FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE

Northeast Alabama Community College demonstrates compliance in maintaining a curriculum that is directly related and appropriate to the purpose and goals of the institution and the diplomas, certificates or degrees awarded.

The Mission and Goals Statement of Northeast Alabama Community College presents the following goals related to curriculum:

·            General education at the freshman and sophomore levels that prepares students to continue their education through transfer.

·           Courses in transfer and career programs that are available, accessible, and affordable to students.

·           Developmental education which assists individuals who need to improve their basic learning skills and supports individuals lacking college preparatory backgrounds.

·           Technical, vocational, and career education programs that prepare students for employment in occupational fields and which lead to certificates, diplomas, and/or associate degrees.

·           Training that meets the specific educational needs of businesses, industries, community organizations, and governmental agencies.

The curriculum is directly related and appropriate to these goals in the following respects:

General education at the freshman and sophomore levels is articulated with the curricula of

senior colleges and universities in Alabama through the Statewide Transfer and Articulation Reporting System (STARS). Developed by a panel known as the Alabama Articulation and General Studies Committee (AGSC), this online articulation resource provides students and their advisors a reliable transfer guide specifying the courses to be taken at NACC for transfer into the chosen program of study at the senior institution. The courses at the public community colleges are standardized through the Alabama College System Course Directory and are recognized by the senior institutions for transfer. The general education program requires a specified number of hours in written composition, humanities and the fine arts, natural science and mathematics, and social sciences. NACC also requires completion of courses to develop competency in public speaking and computer literacy.

Courses in transfer and career programs are made available and accessible through the location of the college (relatively centralized within the service area) and through scheduling of both day and extended day classes, as well as a growing number of dual enrollment and online course offerings.  Table 2 summarizes the subject area and delivery of Fall 2002 course offerings, and Table 3 shows class sections and enrollments by area for the same term.  Special accessibility concerns for students who cope with disabilities are met by the Disability Services Coordinator. Progress of recent students who cope with disabilities is reported in Table 4. Affordability is maintained through relatively low tuition rates and a financial aid program of federal aid, scholarships, and student loans. (Tables 5, 6, and 7).
