When
writing a resume:
-
I use
Times New Roman
-
It’s
easy for the reader to read
-
HR
Recruiters like it
-
Most
people reviewing resumes spend about 20-30- seconds scanning
a resume. So you want to highlight your strengths and
qualifications at the beginning of your resume. I use a lot
of bullets and short statements to do this.
-
At the
top of your page I center the following information: name,
address, city, state & zip, telephone numbers (put your cell
phone number first and then your home telephone number
second) (It’s not necessary to put (Mobile) or (Home) before
the numbers). Then email address.

I
usually use the following order for headings and sections of
the resume. Objective, Qualifications, Experience,
Education, and then Honors, Activities, and
Extracurricular. (You may not use all the last three
headings, you may choose to link that information in one or
two of them and that’s fine).
-
I
bold your name and use 14 point
-
I use 1
word headings and I bold them
-
I use
12 point or 11 point for everything else in your resume
-
One
page resumes are best!
-
It’s
not necessary to put (References Available) at the bottom of
your resume. I use the whole page to highlight your skills
and qualifications.
-
I do
type a separate page of References to give to potential
employers if asked for them.
-
If I am
very interested in an opportunity that I have interviewed
for and they have not asked me for my references, I offer
them at the end of my first interview.
-
I
research the company prior to sending a resume, and read
their web page to gain helpful information about the company
to use while writing my cover letter, revising my resume to
identify specific skills they are looking for on my resume
if I have them and to use during an interview. This also
helps you eliminate questions you may have and enables you
to spend more time in an interview talking about your skills
and qualifications.
-
Sample
questions I might ask at the end of an interview about the
company are (strategic plans, company missions, company
goals, department goals, long term plans, support
professional development, etc., etc.,) that will impress an
interviewer and that will let the interviewer know that you
are interested in the company and position.
-
I use
resume paper with a water mark. You can buy this at
Wal-Mart. I like to use the Ivory color or light grey. Do
not use a bright color.
