Mu Alpha Theta Inducts New Members

The Northeast Alabama Community College chapter of Mu Alpha Theta recently inducted new members during the Fall, 2011, semester.

Mu Alpha Theta is the national mathematics honor society for community college and high school students throughout the United States. To be eligible for membership in Mu Alpha Theta a student must have completed MTH112 Precalculus Algebra or a higher level mathematics course; have a 3.0 GPA (out of a possible 4.0) in all two year college mathematics courses at or above the MTH112 level; and, be pursuing a higher level mathematics course, that is one above the MTH112 level.

The 2011-2012 Mu Alpha Theta Officers are President: Kim Dalton; Vice President: Ashley Graham; Secretary: Dustin Dalton; Treasurer: Tyler Thompson; and Parliamentarian: Josh Banzhoff. Faculty sponsors are Greg Millican and Milah Breland.

Aerospace engineer Greg Graham spoke to the inductees about his career centered around the design and testing of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and inertial navigation systems at the U.S. Army Aviation Missile Research Development Engineering Center in Huntsville. He encouraged students to co-op while pursuing their degree and pointed out that grades do matter. Engineering graduates with a Bachelorís degree and a 2.0 GPA could have a starting salary of $39,000, a 3.0 GPA starting salary is around $45,000, while a 4.0 GPA with co-op experience may enter the workforce at $49,000.

Ball, Meagan Black, Heather Boyd, John Bullock, Ali Colvin, Cory Crabtree, Payton Day, Emily Hall, Chris Haines, Nicki Hollaway, Tammy L. Lachance, Jazmine Lawhorn, Clint McCrary, Joan Michiaels, Megan Moreland, Zackary Brent Murphy, Jessica LeAnn Owens, Belinda Darlene Parmer, Michael Patterson, Crystal Reed, Hilary Todorovich, Adam Trotman, James Michael Walck, and Marlene Williams.

The purpose of Mu Alpha Theta is to promote scholarship in, and enjoyment and understanding of, mathematics. Mu Alpha Theta offers one $500 summer honors scholarship to a current Mu Alpha Theta member planning to register for at least three semester hours during the Summer, 2012, semester. Application packets will be available in March. Mu Alpha Theta will also sponsor an Algebra I Bowl for area Algebra I students on Thursday, April 5, 2012, at 4:30 pm.
