Holiday Gala Will Feature Alumnus

The Northeast Alabama Community College Foundation Board is hosting its annual Holiday Gala on Thursday, December 8 in the lobby of the Tom Bevill Lyceum. Jeff Hawes, noted gospel vocalist, will be honored as the NACC Alumnus of the Year. Hawes is the son of Royce and Kathy Hawes of Flat Rock, a 2002 graduate of Pisgah High School, a 2004 graduate of Northeast Alabama Community College and a 2006 graduate of Troy University.

Hawes attended NACC on an Encore Scholarship and sang with the College show choir. He was involved in many other activities including, Editor-in-Chief of the Backroads Yearbook staff, treasurer of Sigma Kappa Delta, SGA Vice President and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. In 2004, Hawes was awarded NACC’s President’s Cup and was selected to represent NACC for the All-Alabama Academic Team. Hawes attended Troy University on a full-academic scholarship majoring in English Language Arts Education. After graduating, he returned home to Jackson County to teach English at Dutton Elementary School and later at Pisgah High School. While teaching, Hawes continued to follow a dream of singing gospel music. He auditioned in Atlanta for the Gospel Music Channel’s hit reality show Gospel Dream and was chosen as one of three to begin filming the show in Nashville. Hawes made it through several rounds of competition and finished in the Top 12 in the nation.

In 2010, after winning the Aaron Wilburn Talent Competition in LaGrange, Georgia, Hawes auditioned to replace the tenor for Karen Peck and New River. After becoming a part of this award-winning group, Hawes felt his “gospel dreams” were about to come true.

Hawes currently travels the world with this Grammy-nominated gospel group and is part of the Gaither Homecoming Family. He has been featured on four of the latest Homecoming DVDs and was in the Top 5 for the Horizon Individual Award for the 2011 Singing Fan Awards.

Hawes is extremely honored to be this year’s NACC Alumnus of the Year. “I have always felt that NACC was the foundation for my future. The instructors and administrators truly have a passion for seeing college students succeed, and they allowed me to take my dreams and turn them into reality. NACC will forever be home to me.”

NACC invites graduates and friends of the College to show their support by purchasing tickets to the Holiday Gala. “The Foundation Holiday Gala is always a beautiful event, and monies raised will assist the College and assist students with scholarships,” stated Heather Rice, NACC Development Director. “This year we are not only excited to be honoring Jeff as Alumnus of the Year, but very excited that he will be performing as well.”

Tickets for the event are $50. For more information please contact Heather Rice at ext. *2301 or email riceh@nacc.edu.
