Non-Perishable Food Donations to Aid Storm Victims

Those attending Northeast Alabama Community College graduations this weekend will have the opportunity to donate to a drive to provide non-perishable food items for those in need as a result of the destruction and devastation from last week’s storms, according to college officials.

“If you are planning to attend one of these events, we see this as a good opportunity for people to donate,” stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. “We expect several thousand people at these graduation events and we thought with some organization this would provide a way to help.”

Northeast will be conducting its Associate Degree Graduation on Friday, May 13, 2011 beginning at 7:00 p.m. and Adult Education graduation will be held Saturday, May 14, 2011 beginning at 6:00 p.m. Both graduation events will be held in the Rainsville Agri-Business Center at 1571 McCurdy Avenue North, Rainsville.

“We asked area relief work leaders and they told us one of the greatest needs they have now are non-perishable foods needed by those displaced by the storm,” stated Dr. Joe Burke, NACC Vice President/Dean of Instruction. “So we are focusing our drive on this need.”

Members of the 2011 NACC Associate and Adult Education graduating classes will be bringing in non-perishable food to the graduation events. As noted, family, friends, Northeast faculty and staff, and other guests attending the graduations are invited to make donations as well. Northeast will transport the donated food from the Rainsville Agri-Business Center to supply distribution centers operated by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. College officials note that by giving directly to the two Sheriff’s organizations that the donated non-perishable foods will go to DeKalb and Jackson County people.
