Northeast Gets Involved with FEMA’s Long-Term Recovery Plan

Northeast Alabama Community College’s Vice-President/Dean of Instruction, Dr. Joe Burke, and Sigma Kappa Delta Historian, Erica Fremming, attended a meeting of the Rainsville City Council and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Association) recently. The primary purpose of the meeting was to focus on a long-term recovery plan that would include ways to minimize the damage from future disasters. Burke and Fremming attended to explore ways in which the college might be included in these efforts.

“I came away from the meeting with a sense of pride in the community,” stated Burke. “Citizens of the Rainsville area are to be commended for their resilience in overcoming adversity and their dedication to long term recovery. Northeast is ready to assist in any way we can to bring about lasting positive change to our area.”

Sigma Kappa Delta, the college’s English honor society, has already begun a chapter project—Project Hope: Rebuilding Our Communities—that has provided book bags with supplies to 51 students and boxes of school supplies to Plainview High School, Sylvania High School, and North Sand Mountain High School. Additionally, prior to the opening of school this fall the organization sponsored a writing workshop for English teachers from area high schools to receive professional development credit.

Members of the organization hope to find other ways in which to volunteer and to assist in the rebuilding process. “After attending the community meeting, I realized just how important our chapter project is,” noted Fremming. “When we began, I saw Project Hope as something we could do for tornado victims as they started back to school, but now I realize that the recovery efforts will extend long beyond the fall semester and that our chapter may be able to continue to help with some of these efforts.”
