Entering Class of 1965 Holds Reunion

Northeast Alabama Community College held a reunion for the Class of 1965 on Sunday, July 31 at the Tom Bevill Lyceum. These classmates were the first to ever walk through the doors at what was then Northeast Alabama State Junior College. Classmates enjoyed a day of fellowship and reminiscing about the “good ole days.” During lunch Dr. David Campbell, NACC President spoke about how the College has grown and the many programs offered to students. He told the classmates that although the college has changed in many ways it is the same as when they were students. He added that they would still find the College to be the friendly, helpful, family-like campus as it was when they were here.

The classmates also heard from John Cooper, Alabama Department of Transportation Director, who was also a first classmate and the first SGA President. “Being members of the first class, my wife and I are grateful for the role Northeast played in our lives,” stated Cooper. “Northeast makes a greater contribution every year, and we treasure our associations here.” Cooper also gave praises to the first instructors including Roy Smith from Valley Head, who was present for the reunion. Later class members heard from Laura Kerby, current SGA President. Both Cooper and Kerby presented information comparing the then and now of campus life. After lunch classmates were escorted on campus tours given by NACC Presidential Hosts.

This Class Reunion kicked off a series of events that will take place over the next few years leading to a 50th Anniversary Homecoming Celebration in 2015. “Every year until our Homecoming Celebration we will hold special events for former and current students,” stated Heather Rice, Development Director. “Each event will be specialized to a certain decade or certain group of students including former basketball players, Miss Northeast and retired faculty members.” Rice invites all students and friends of NACC to join the Alumni and Friends Association by visiting “Joining the NACC Alumni and Friends Association is the best way for us to keep you informed on future events.”

“It was great having the first Northeast class back on campus,” stated NACC President Dr. David Campbell. “I was able to talk to many of the class members about their experiences here, and I could tell that they look back fondly on their time at Northeast and are very appreciative of the education that the college provided. The entire Reunion was a very rewarding event for us all.” Campbell gave special thanks to Heather Rice, NACC Director of Development, Susan Barron, NACC Director of High School Relations/Event Planner, and the NACC Reunion Committee for their work. The Reunion Committee consisted of Dr. Joe Burke, Joan Reeves, Joan Tucker, Greg Millican, Andrea Wheeler, Pat Wildman, Misty Chapman, Laura Kerby and Ryan Tramel.
