Instructor Presents At 2009 NADE
Conference
Northeast Alabama Community College was recently represented at
the 2009 National Association of Developmental Educators (NADE)
conference in Greensboro, N.C., by Jessica Whitmore, an adjunct
instructor with the English department. She has been teaching
developmental courses at NACC since Fall 2007. Whitmore’s
professional background has been in secondary special education.
It was the fusion of these two experiences that led to the
development of the paper on which the NADE workshop was founded.
The National Center for Developmental Education (NCDE) has
invited Whitmore to publish the paper/workshop, “The Individual
Education of a College Student,” in The Journal of Developmental
Education. This is the official journal of the NCDE and touts
over 4,000 subscribers.
The NADE workshop, “The Individualized Education of a College
Student,” included a short lecture explaining the theoretical
framework of the strategies for instructional delivery to
diverse learners in the developmental English classroom;
presentation of materials/handouts to guide collection of
student learning styles/needs; and an interactive discussion to
tailor strategies to the needs of the participating members of
the workshop. “Mrs. Whitmore’s workshop had excellent attendance
and participation by the attendees, and by the end of the
presentation, she was given an exceptional evaluation for a job
well done,” stated Shirley Buttram, NACC’s Coordinator of
Developmental Studies, who attended Whitmore’s workshop.
Whitmore is the current advisor for the publication of NACC’s
08-09 yearbook Backroads. She is also involved with
creative writing endeavors including the contribution of
editorial work for NACC’s literary journal, Aurora. In
addition, Whitmore is the author of a collection of fictional
short stories, The Mountain, which is currently under
contract with the Literary Agency Group, Inc. and under
consideration at Viking/Penguin and Ohio University Press
publishing houses.
