Northeast Quiz Team Honored By Alabama State Board Of Education

The Northeast Alabama Community College (Mustang) Quiz Team recently was honored in Montgomery by the Alabama State Board of Education for the group’s state and national accomplishments this past year. On behalf of the State Board, Dr. Mary Jane Caylor, president pro tempore and Eight District representative, presented the resolution to Mustang Quiz Team members Casey Lowery, Cord Pack, and Tyler Hughes and NACC faculty sponsor Dr. Daphne Huntley. Also representing Northeast at the ceremony were NACC President Dr. David Campbell and Vice President/Dean of Instruction Dr. Joe Burke. NACC students Garrett Monroe and Andrew Burdette also are members of the Quiz Team and faculty members Brad Fricks, Kevin Holt, and Denise Patterson serve as sponsors in addition to Dr. Huntley.

Dr. Caylor commended the Quiz Team and Northeast for the team’s accomplishments and stated that their achievements reflect extremely well on the Alabama Community College System. The State Board passed the resolution unanimously and during the program presiding Board Vice President Randy McKinney asked each NACC Quiz Team member to tell the board and audience about their future educational plans.

The Mustang Quiz Team reached the top in 2008-2009 competition, including a community college first place finish in what is considered the national championship of quiz team competition, the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament, this year held in Dallas, Texas. In addition to finishing first among community colleges, the Mustang Quiz Team in direct competition also out-ranked freshman/sophomore teams from such notable four-year universities as Princeton, Vanderbilt, Case-Western Reserve, and the University of California at Los Angeles. During 2008-2009 competition, the NACC team also placed first among community colleges at the Alabama College Bowl League Championship and was undefeated in five other community college competitions.

Going into the 2009-2010 season of competition, the Mustang Quiz Team currently is ranked first in the Southeast. All members of the Quiz Team from last year are back for 2009-2010 with new Quiz Team members added. Northeast provides scholarships to Quiz Team members who are recruited from area high schools. Quiz team competition, already quite extensive nationally and regionally, is growing in popularity at both the high school and postsecondary levels.

“This is obviously a great achievement for the Mustang Quiz Team and their sponsors,” NACC President Dr. David Campbell stated. “To compete and win at this level requires great ability, dedication, discipline, and hard work. These students and their accomplishments represent what we strive to achieve as an educational institution here at Northeast. Congratulations to them and the entire college for providing the educational foundation for this achievement.”
