NACC Quiz Team Finishes Second at NAQT
Sectionals
The Northeast Alabama Community College Quiz Team finished in
second place at the NAQT Alabama Sectionals competition on
January 23, 2009. Until this competition, Northeast had been
undefeated by any community college for the season. At
Sectionals, Northeast competed against eight other community
college teams, and lost to both Snead State and Jeff State.
Nevertheless, Northeast finished with the highest number of
points of any team at the competition.
Northeast freshman Casey Lowery also won a second-place trophy
for his individual performance at the competition. This is
Casey’s fourth individual trophy of the year.
The Quiz Team competes in Jeopardy-style academic competition
against other community colleges and universities
Despite its second-place finish at sectionals, the Mustangs are
hoping to be one of sixteen community colleges from across the
nation to compete in Orlando, Florida for the national title.
“We should know in the next couple of weeks whether we’ll be one
of the teams invited to nationals. This would be our first
invitation, and we’re proud of our team and all they’ve
accomplished this year,” said Dr. Daphne Huntley, Northeast
English instructor and co-sponsor.
“I’m surprised at how much the team has grown in skill in just
this year alone,” said Denise Patterson, Quiz Team co-sponsor.
“This team is growing stronger with every competition.”
In addition to Huntley and Patterson, Brad Fricks and Kevin Holt
serve as co-sponsors for the team. “This group of dedicated
students represents some of the brightest minds on our campus,
and their success is a reflection of both their individual
efforts and the tremendous support from the college,” said
Fricks, adding, “NACC is lucky to have such ambassadors for our
school.”
