MEMORANDUM

See http://www.flu.gov

TO:           Students, Staff, and Faculty

FROM:        Dr. David Campbell, President

SUBJECT:    H1N1 (Swine) Influenza

DATE:         September 1, 2009

As I am sure you are aware, health officials throughout Alabama and the United States are warning of the spreading of the H1N1 influenza in the coming months, and already there have been cases reported in our area.

College personnel have monitored closely developments in regard to the outbreak of H1N1 influenza.  Several college officials, for example, took part in a recent conference call with the United States Department of Education concerning dealing with the H1N1 influenza at colleges and universities.   College officials have been in contact with local public health officials concerning H1N1 influenza preventive measures and more interactive meetings are scheduled.   Dr. Joe Burke, NACC Vice President/Dean of Instruction, serves as the college’s coordinator for establishing preventive measures in dealing with H1N1 influenza.

As a result of the college’s efforts to date, anti-viral, anti-bacterial sanitizer has been placed in dispensers throughout campus at Northeast, particularly in restrooms.  Additionally, this sanitizer is also now available in the college’s laboratories and computer rooms.  Students and all personnel are encouraged to utilize these sanitizers at all possible opportunities.

The following link also gives some excellent information on the prevention of H1N1 influenza at colleges and universities (http://www.flu.gov/plan/school/higheredguidance.html).  Northeast will observe these guidelines and implement any measures deemed appropriate and beneficial at any time.  NACC personnel, for example, follow the cleaning procedures and techniques that are recommended to help prevent the spread of H1N1.  At this point, of course, no one knows how severe the impact of H1N1 influenza will be and there is certainly no reason for panic.  The college simply wants to be prepared for whatever circumstances might occur.

A key to all this is that if you do contract H1N1 influenza, stay home until you are completely well.   NACC Instructors and personnel will work with students in providing opportunities to catch up on work missed as a result of absences due to H1N1 influenza.

Please rest assured that the college will do whatever it takes to protect students and personnel from health problems associated with the spread of H1N1 influenza.  Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in helping us achieve this goal for the Northeast community.
