High School Writing Winners Announced
The Northeast Alabama Community College
chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta, the English honorary for two-year
schools, is proud to announce its winners of the 2007 Writing
Competition for students in area middle schools and high
schools. Each year the college asks area teachers to submit
poetry, fiction, and essays from students in grades 7-9 and
10-12. These entries are then judged by a panel of Sigma Kappa
Delta members and NACC faculty. The top three students in each
area of each division are given certificates and plaques and are
recognized at NACC’s annual awards day program. Additionally,
the student’s work will be published in the upcoming edition of
the Aurora, the college’s literary magazine.
This year’s competition was quite successful. The college
received eighty-eight entries from schools in DeKalb County,
Jackson County, and Fort Payne City systems. The winners are as
follows: Fiction 7-9—1st Place Austin Mullican (Paint Rock
Valley), 2nd Place Erica McCullough (Crossville), and 3rd Place
Tammy Hall (Crossville); Poetry 7-9—1st Place Cheyenne Murphy
(North Jackson), 2nd Place Tammy Hall (Crossville), and 3rd
Place Angel Valdez (North Jackson); Essay 7-9—1st Place Chelsey
Dixon (Crossville), 2nd Place Jordanna Kidd (Crossville), and
3rd Place Emily Peek (Crossville); Fiction 10-12—1st Place Alex
Pointer (Crossville), 2nd Place Stacey Hurst (North Jackson),
and 3rd Place Ryan Shankles (Sylvania); Poetry 10-12—1st Place
Stacey Hurst (North Jackson), 2nd Place Lauryn Hinton (Section),
and 3rd Place Jacob House (Fort Payne); Essay 10-12—1st Place
Sean Bennett (Crossville), 2nd Place Ashton Andrews (Sylvania),
and 3rd Place Ryan Mason (North Jackson).
Congratulations to all these talented students and their
teachers. The teachers who are responsible for working with
these students are Charlotte German (Paint Rock Valley) Carla
Luther (Crossville High), Kelly Hancock (Section High), Starla
Finch (Sylvania High), Melanie Nevels (North Jackson High),
David Tombrello (North Jackson High), Pam Tidmore (Crossville
