NACC Receives Workforce Training Grant

Northeast Alabama Community College president, Dr. David Campbell recently announced that the college has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development. This grant will be used to administer the Ready-to-Work training program, which prepares Alabama workers with basic workforce skills.

The Ready-to-Work program is a joint effort of Alabama Industrial Development Training, the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development, and the Alabama College System. Grants were awarded across the state to support the development of these training programs, which include up to 200 hours of training at no charge to the participant. Participants who complete the entire program will have the opportunity to earn the Alabama Certified Worker and Career Readiness Certificates, both at no charge.

“I am excited that Northeast was selected to administer this program,” stated Mike Kennamer, Director of Workforce Development at NACC. “The training meant to give participants the basic skill sets that employers across the state require of their employees,” continued Kennamer.

The Ready-to-Work program will offer up to 200 hours of either full-time or part-time training in computer skills, problem solving, workplace behavior, manufacturing, and job acquisition. The college has not yet announced the locations for the training, though Kennamer states that the college is open to locating the training sessions at times and places in which they are needed.

“I would like to see us work with civic organizations, churches, and other organizations in the community to place training where it is needed most,” said Kennamer. “We are very much interested in maximizing these funds by partnering with organizations that can provide us with a location (preferably one with computers available), and students who would benefit from the program.”

“Part of Northeast’s mission is to provide job skills training for the community,” stated President Campbell. “We appreciate the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development providing us with this resource that will help us to do even more job skills training for people in our service area.”
