NACC Students Attend Regional Theatre Convention

Eight students from the Northeast Alabama Community College Theatre department recently attended the 58th Annual Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) in Atlanta, GA. SETC is the largest and most active regional theatre organization in the country, and they sponsored the convention, which boasted hundreds of workshops, several highly acclaimed speakers, auditions for year round and summer employment, commercial and college exhibits, and several play festivals. Top-ranked theatre professionals led workshops ranging from fun improvisational workshops to panel discussions with other theatre professors regarding the changing face of college theatre. In addition to the wide array of workshops, participants were able to meet with colleges from all over the US that offer graduate and undergraduate degrees in theatre.

Attending the conference were Jonathan Gann of Dade County, Georgia; Sterling Webb of Scottsboro; Samantha Carrick of Dade County; Taylor Campbell of Arab; Whitney Rooks of Centre; Brenton Bellomy of Scottsboro; Allison P. McBryar of Bryant; and Matthew Taheri of Rainsville.

These eight students auditioned in October at the state level in order to qualify to audition for theatre employment at the SETC conference. Of the students who were passed on to regionals, Matthew Taheri of Rainsville received highest honors. He, along with approximately 900 other college students, auditioned for over 100 companies who were seeking performers for their theatre companies. He received 25 requests for further interviews; 20 of the 25 requests were for paid positions in the theatre. His interviews were with such acclaimed theatre companies as the Georgia Shakespeare Festival, Florida Shakespeare Festival, Orlando Repertory Theatre, and other theatres as far away as New York and California. At press Matthew had already been offered two jobs in Ohio theatres.

Activities such as the SETC conference afford our students the opportunity, training, and experience to become effective communicators in our digital age of theatre. The students and faculty who attended the auditions expressed appreciation to NACC President Dr. David Campbell, the NACC faculty and staff, and the NACC Theatre Guild for making the conference trip a reality.

NACC continues to produce quality plays at affordable ticket prices. For more information on the NACC Theatre call 638-4418 or 228-6001, ext. 218, or visit the
