Student Honors College When College
Recognizes Honor Students
Northeast Alabama Community College held a reception for its
Honor Students recently and the college wound up being honored
itself. Sangduan Barnes of Lampang, Thailand presented NACC and
NACC President Dr. David Campbell with a pottery/vase symbolic
of her native country of Thailand. Barnes stated that she just
wanted to do something to show her appreciation for getting to
attend Northeast. “I love college here,” Barnes said. “The
teachers are very good and they help me to study.”
Sangduan
Barnes is a pre-nursing student and maintains a perfect 4.0
grade point average. When asked of differences in attending
college in America, Barnes stated that it would be very
difficult for someone her age (27) to attend college. Most who
attend in Thailand, she said, are just out of high school. Dr.
Campbell noted that one of the great things about U.S. community
colleges is that they are open and available to students of all
ages and that it is never too late to begin a program of study
or career. Ms. Barnes and her husband John live at Fyffe,
Alabama.
NACC hosts a reception for its honor
students each year and invites their family members. Honor
students are those who have made the Dean’s or President’s list
while at the college. “By demonstrating that you have the
motivation, ability, and time management skills to become an
Honor Student, it tells us that you can succeed at anything you
attempt in life,” Campbell told the students. “This is only a
beginning for you.” The President’s Honor Reception was held in
the college’s Tom Bevill Lyceum and was attended by some two
hundred students, student family members, and Northeast faculty
and staff.
