NACC Quiz Team Wins Its First State
Trophy
The Northeast Alabama Community College Quiz Team recently won
its first State Championship trophy at the University of
Montevallo. The team placed third out of eight competing
two-year college teams.
Denise Patterson, co-sponsor, accompanied
the team to Montevallo and was its coach for the State
Championship. The Northeast Quiz Team members are Garrett
Monroe, Andrew Burdette, Jake Hicks, and Candice Lynch.
Co-sponsor is Dr. Daphne Huntley.
Lynch won a fourth place trophy for her individual performance
in the State Championship, making her the fourth highest
competitor out of 32 two-year college students from across the
state.
Hicks won an All-Star team trophy for his overall performance
for the year. Jake’s trophy puts him fifth out of more than
seventy competitors who participated in Alabama College Bowl
League events for the 2007-2008 academic year. “It has been the
best year of my life,” said Hicks, a freshman from Stevenson. “I
thank Dr. Huntley for the opportunity and I look forward to next
year.”
Monroe, a freshman from Pisgah, said, “This past year on the
team has been a great learning experience. I have learned how
much I don’t know and how much I really do know. It’s been a
great ride!” Burdette, a freshman from Pisgah, added, “I’ve had
a good time this year. I’ve learned a lot, and I look forward to
competing for Northeast next year—and who knows—winning more
trophies next year!”

Lynch, a sophomore from Grant,
summed up the experience by offering, “A professor of
physics, Dr. Albert Bartlett, once said, ‘The greatest
shortcoming of the human race is our inability to
understand the exponential function.’ Through our
combined efforts, our team has proven the power of this
function, not only to ourselves, but to our school, our
community and our state.”
