Sigma Kappa Delta Chapter Recognized at
National Conference
The Sigma Tau Delta/Sigma Kappa Delta international conference
was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, March 23-27. Northeast
Alabama Community College’s Epsilon Alpha chapter of Sigma Kappa
Delta was impressive as its members participated in
presentations and earned scholarships and awards. Sponsors Joan
Reeves and Joan Tucker accompanied fourteen SKD members, who
attended student presentations and readings and book signings by
Lorene Cary, author of Black Ice; U. S. Poet Laureate
2008-2010, Kay Ryan; and Dave Eggers, who wrote the screenplay
for Where the Wild Things Are. Northeast students Olivia
Dodd and Jesse Hairston participated in the panel discussion, “A
Literary Gateway: Opening Works of Vision.” They shared personal
experiences with transformative texts.
Northeast instructor Joan Reeves presently serves as national
president for Sigma Kappa Delta and presided over the awards
luncheon. The NACC chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta was awarded the
outstanding journal award for its tenth anniversary edition of
Aurora. In addition, members Olivia Dodd and Marie Hall
were awarded service scholarships for their work in the Epsilon
Alpha Chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta.
An unexpected high honor was bestowed upon sponsor Joan Reeves
when the National Sigma Kappa Delta Board announced it had
unanimously voted to name one of the service scholarships the
Joan Reeves Service Scholarship. Reeves commented, “I am
overwhelmed by this honor. To be recognized in this manner for
the work I have done in an organization which means so much to
me is immensely gratifying.”
