NACC Criminal Justice Students See Project Realized

Fort Payne Councilman Andrew Hairston and SRO Sergeant Steven Whited decided to work together toward a project--a much needed new police car for the city of Fort Payne--a police car which would be used at the city schools as a tool for students to interact with the police in a positive way.

Councilman Hairston is a former Criminal Justice student at Northeast Alabama Community College and recent graduate of Jacksonville State University. Sergeant Whited is a current NACC sophomore majoring in Criminal Justice.

Hairston and Whited submitted their idea to Police Chief David Walker. Chief Walker is also connected with Northeast as an adjunct Criminal Justice instructor. “I expected these students would get the full support of Chief Walker. He is one of the most professional men I know in the field of Law Enforcement and has always been an advocate of higher education in policing,” stated Criminal Justice advisor and instructor Brent Satterfield.

These three then presented it to the Mayor and remaining Council members. Everyone was in agreement that there was a need for this new vehicle. The car selected was a Dodge Charger SRT equipped with a HEMI engine and the most up-to-date lighting equipment available. The car also has a very distinctive growl to demonstrate its connection with the “Wildcats of Fort Payne.”

“It is always rewarding to hear that my students are working together to improve the image of our chosen profession,” said Satterfield. “Both of these men were excellent students and I expect to see even greater things come from them. I am proud of my students and when they do well it’s a reflection on Northeast and me. It is an honor for me to work with such outstanding men as these three,” he concluded.
