NACC Students Attend National SKD
Convention
Recently, eight students from Northeast Alabama Community
College attended the National Sigma Kappa Delta Convention in
Louisville, Kentucky. While at the conference, the students had
the opportunity to meet a few of today's world renowned authors
including Naomi Shihab Nye, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Kim Edwards.
The attendees also had the option of going to individual
workshops on topics ranging from poetry to fiction. In their
spare time, the students discovered the magnificent city of
Louisville, Kentucky and marveled at all of the snow that had
accumulated. An awards ceremony was held and Sarah Sneed,
President of our local chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta, was awarded
a scholarship for her dedication to the society.
Eight students attended the event but nine were supposed to be
representing NACC. In December 2007, Deborah Stevenson, a
student at NACC, died in an automobile accident. Two of her
written works were accepted at the convention to be read aloud.
While choking back tears, SKD Sponsor Joan Reeves and Jared
Cushen filled in for Deborah at the convention and made sure
that her peers were made aware of how gifted and dedicated she
was.
Sigma Kappa Delta is a national English honor society. The
Epsilon Alpha chapter at NACC was the first chapter to be
chartered in the State of Alabama. Since its establishment, over
1,700 Northeast students have earned this prestigious honor.
