Medical Assistant Students Use New
Equipment
Pictured below are Jimmy and Denitra Lewis of the Medical
Assistant Program at Northeast Alabama Community College. They
are a married couple attending classes together at Northeast.
They are shown practicing on a new piece of equipment called the
musclemate.
The musclemate is designed to look like
the upper arm with the underlying muscles with emphasis on the
deltoid muscle. The idea is that the student will feel how to
determine the exact spot for giving the IM injection. The arm is
attached to the person’s shoulder by velcro. It can actually
receive an injection with medicine in the syringe. To determine
if the injection has been give correctly a buzzer will sound and
a red light will flash to let the student know the shot was
given in the wrong place. There will be no sound or flash if the
injection was given correctly.
Mrs. Lewis commented on coming back to school later in life and
admitted that she had been nervous. Now that she is back, she
says the experience has been so good that she can’t wait to sign
up for the fall classes.
The Medical Assistant Career continues to be in high demand in
clinics and doctors' offices. Anyone interested in registering
for fall classes in the Medical Assistant Program can contact
Rachel Walker, Program Coordinator, at phone extension 323 or
e-mail walkerr@nacc.edu
