NACC Students Learn about Leadership

Recently, eight Northeast Alabama Community College students traveled to Wallace State Community College at Hanceville for a two- day Student Leadership Institute.

Officers of Northeast’s Student Government Association and Sigma Kappa Delta attended the conference to learn how to be more effective leaders. In keeping with the theme “Rolling out the Red Carpet for Our Community College Leaders,” everywhere the students went, they entered on a red carpet indicating how important student leaders are for the college they represent. The student leaders were given ways to help them recognize traits in themselves and others that would build cohesive teams to accomplish the goals of the various groups on the individual college campuses.

The keynote speaker for the Student Leadership Institute was Lynn Hodges, who gave a presentation called “The Magic of Leadership.” Dr. David Hodge, Dean of Students with Chattahoochee Valley Community College, led the group in the Human Rights Pledge and discussed its meaning for student leaders.

The approximately 275 student leaders from community colleges within the Alabama College System were then divided into Learning Communities consisting of twelve to fifteen students. Various facilitators from across the state helped the student leaders recognize their “True Colors,” a personality profile. Three Northeast personnel served among the facilitators for the Learning Communities: Joan Reeves, Tonie Niblett, and Andrea Wheeler. The student leaders then had to design a bumper sticker working together as a group with the other personality types (colors). The bumper stickers were displayed at the dance on Thursday night and the winners were voted on by the entire Student Leadership Institute.

Northeast’s Dean of Student Services, Tonie Niblett said, “This was my first experience with the SLI. I found it to be an exciting and productive way for student leaders to get training in how to deal with people with a different personality types. Our students had a very good time and felt that they learned a lot. It will be interesting for me to watch our students put into practice what they learned at SLI. The great thing about the skills that the students learned is that they can use them not only at Northeast but for the rest of their lives.” She went on to say, “This was the seventh annual Student Leadership Institute, and it is sponsored by the Alabama Deans of Student Affairs Association.”

The theme of the Thursday night dance was the “Glitz and Glamour of the Red Carpet.” Northeast students are pictured below in their “glitzy” attire as they prepare to attend the banquet and dance. They are Sarah Sneed, Laura Brewer, Matthew Hubbard, Jessica Freeman, John Stubblefield, Kerry Adkins, Danielle Hawes, and Amber McIntire.
