Northeast Receives Grant for Industry Training Center

Northeast Alabama Community College President Dr. David Campbell recently announced that the college will receive a $150,000 grant from the Alabama Public School and College Authority. Funds will be used to renovate the Industry Training Center on campus.

“We are pleased that the Alabama Public School and College Authority has awarded this grant to help in the renovation of the Industry Training Center,” stated Dr. David Campbell. “When we moved the Emergency Medical Services program into the new Health Education and Workforce Development Center last August, it made that building available for other programs.”

The Industry Training Center will house the Industrial Systems Technology program and other industry-related programs. The building includes two classrooms, three offices, and a high bay area. Funds will be used to upgrade the building for energy efficiency, rewire the high bay area to accommodate a variety of industrial equipment, install safety and health systems, and upgrade restrooms to ADA compliance.

Mike Kennamer, Director of Workforce Development at Northeast, reported that he is excited to have the opportunity to remodel and repurpose this building for the Industrial Systems Technology program. “The college’s growth over the past several years limited us as to what programs we could add, since some programs require a good deal of dedicated space,” said Kennamer. “However, with the completion of the Health Education and Workforce Development Center in August, we have been able to move forward with other programs.”

The Industrial Systems Technology program started this semester as a short-term certificate. Kennamer expects the degree program, which will include options for maintenance mechanic, electrical and instrumentation, multi-skilled maintenance technician, welding, and machining, to be approved for implementation in August.

“I would like to recognize Dr. Joe Burke, our vice president, and Mike Kennamer for their excellent work on this project,” stated Dr. David Campbell. “We look forward to better serving the local business and industry community through this facility and new program.”
