New Certificate Program in Industrial Systems Technology

Northeast Alabama Community College President Dr. David Campbell recently announced that the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education has approved NACC to offer the short-term certificate in Industrial Systems Technology effective for the Spring 2008 semester.

Industrial Systems Technology is a program that integrates mechanical troubleshooting and preventive maintenance with electrical and electronics set-up and troubleshooting. The result is a multi-skilled technician that is able to diagnose and repair problems in industrial settings, including advanced manufacturing systems. Topics of study include electricity, instrumentation, machining, industrial motors, hydraulics, industrial wiring, metal cutting, process control, pneumatics, motor controls, programmable logic controls, welding, and troubleshooting.

“We are excited to be able to offer this certificate program,” stated Dr. David Campbell. “Our growth over the past several years has permitted the college to offer some new career/technical programs. With the opening of the new Health Education and Workforce Development Center, we now have the space to open these programs and the specialized labs needed to support them.”

According to Mike Kennamer, Director of Workforce Development at Northeast, “Industrial systems jobs are good, high-technology jobs that require technical skills to correct problems, but also require the knowledge to understand why a system component is malfunctioning and how to avoid that malfunction in the future.”

Based on results from a survey conducted by the college, Northeast also has applied to the Alabama State Board of Education and the Alabama Commission on Higher Education to offer the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Industrial Systems Technology. This degree would permit the college to conduct even more training in the field of industrial systems technology. The program and application has received support from both the Jackson County and DeKalb County Economic Development Authorities, as well as from a number of area industries. The Alabama Technology Network (ATN) Center located at Northeast will also assist with the funding and support of the program.

“We want to make certain there is a community need for any new program,” said Campbell. “Mr. Kennamer and his staff have done an outstanding job in working with area businesses and industries, as well as with economic development officials, to determine that there is a need locally for this program.”

Those who are interested in the program may e-mail kennamerm@nacc.edu or call the Office of Workforce Development at 256-228-6001 or 256-638-4418, ext. 254 for more information.

Northeast Alabama Community College is a comprehensive community college providing academic transfer courses, career programs, business and industry services, and opportunities for cultural enrichment.
