"Fun of Drawing" Art Show Will Be March
24
A "Fun of Drawing" Art Show featuring students of Elliott
Miller’s advanced drawing (portraiture) class will be held on
Saturday, March 24, beginning at 12 noon in the Student Center
on the campus of Northeast Alabama Community College. The Art
Show is open to the public free of charge. Certificates will be
awarded to art show winners.
Elliott
Miller (pictured at right) is an accomplished professional artist. He began drawing
at age five in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, and has
continued his craft over the past 50 years. He became a
professional artist in 1975 while attending Roosevelt University
in Chicago. For the next 20 years, he supported his wife and
three children on commissions he earned from portraits and
landscape paintings. During the 1990s he moved his family to
Southern California where became a published artist selling his
art prints worldwide, earned an associate degree from Cypress
College, was featured in various national art publications (Art
Business News and Décor Magazine), and became a much
sought-after artist in the popular artists’ mecca of Venice
Beach, California. In 2004, he got an unexpected highlight in
his career with an appearance on the NBC television show “The
Ellen DeGeneres Show” where he performed a quick oil portrait of
Ms. DeGeneres’ mom, Betty, for Mother’s Day of that year. That
show has 14 million viewers. Among some well known patrons and
collectors of his artwork are former Chicago Mayor Harold
Washington, jazz songstress Nancy Wilson, Dr. Betty Shabazz,
Bill and Camille Cosby, Ms. DeGeneres, and Calvin (Snoop Dogg)
Broadus.
In 2005, Miller and his wife relocated to Jackson County,
Alabama, where Miller is an art tutor and teaches art at
Northeast Alabama Community College. Miller’s "Fun of Drawing"
art program at Northeast is for anyone 10 years of age or older
who wants to participate in art classes. No experience is
required; however experienced artists are also invited to
participate. Both basic and advanced instruction are offered and
the emphasis in on having fun. Subjects covered are cartooning,
landscapes, still life, wildlife drawing, and portraiture. The
program also offers abbreviated lessons in art appreciation and
art history. The program is available to individuals, groups,
and communities and is currently being offered through the
Continuing Education Department at Northeast.
The "Fun of Drawing" program was created by Miller because of
his awareness that people admire most forms of art, especially
drawing. “I believe that most people would like to be an
artist,” said Miller. “The problem average people face in terms
of being an artist is they think drawing and painting take
talent or years of training, or both. The fact is almost anyone
who tries hard enough and long enough can draw a simple
picture.”

Community Education page.
