Dr. Ben Knox Chosen Most Outstanding
Faculty Member
Dr. Ben Knox, Counselor and Psychology Instructor at Northeast
Alabama Community College, has been chosen as the Dr. Charles M.
Pendley Founders’ Chair Most Outstanding Faculty Member for
2006-07.
The announcement was made recently at a luncheon at the College
by Lora Mae Davis, chair of the Founders’ Chair Committee, who
said, “This is a special time of the year, announcing the
selection of the Dr. Charles M. Pendley Founders’ Chair Award.
This award is presented to an instructor who demonstrates
exemplary qualities such as preparation, organization, planning,
loyalty, community service, effectiveness in dealing with
students, and working harmoniously with others. Today’s
recipient has excelled in all of the requirements outlined and
certainly is an asset to this College. The committee would like
to recognize each past recipient in attendance for your
contribution and accomplishments to Northeast. We like to think
your selection, as a previous outstanding faculty member,
encouraged you to excel in your careers. You can pick up a
newspaper, almost daily, and read about success after success of
this College. Northeast is a prestigious facility in the state
of Alabama and one we are proud to have in our area. It is my
pleasure to present the 2006-2007 Dr. Charles M. Pendley
Founders’ Chair Award to Dr. Ben Knox."
Upon receiving the award, Dr. Knox expressed appreciation to the
committee for the honor and said, “I feel very honored to
receive this award. I always try to be the best as a faculty
member and will try each day to prove that I am worthy of
receiving this award until my last day at Northeast,” (and
jokingly added) “which will be in about 40 years!”
As the recipient of the award, Dr. Knox receives a cash stipend,
is featured in the NACC yearbook, is recognized at graduation,
and has his name placed on a plaque displayed at the College.
Dr. Knox is in his 25th year as full-time Psychology Instructor
and Counselor. He received his bachelor’s degree from Troy State
University, master’s degree from the University of Alabama, and
his doctorate from Nova Southeastern University. In addition, he
has been a student at Northeast Alabama Community College and
Mississippi State University. He resides in Scottsboro and is
married to Dawn. They have two children, Allen and Jessica.
Dr. Knox is a member of the Alabama Education Association.. He
and his family have done volunteer work in areas related to
music and children’s ministries for several churches, charity
organizations, and businesses in Jackson and Madison counties.
Lora May Davis added, “Dr. Campbell, we thank you for your
outstanding leadership. We also give a big thanks to Pat
Wildman, who does all the work behind the scenes and does such a
good job. Thanks also to Lindsay Durham, president of the
Northeast Student Government Association for all her help with
this special event. Lindsay, we wish you the best in your future
challenges. We would also like to recognize Debra Barrentine,
Director of Promotions and Marketing, for the outstanding job
she does in keeping this college in a positive light, and the
public up to date on college activities and achievements. It is
people like all of you, working together toward a goal of higher
education, that keep this college going and growing.”
“This is one of our favorite occasions of the year here at
Northeast,” stated Dr. David Campbell, President of Northeast.
“It’s what we are all about. There is no higher honor than to be
chosen outstanding faculty member and there are many outstanding
ones here today who have already been chosen. Dr. Ben Knox is
such a popular instructor with the students. He has between
150-160 students each term. He is always willing to take on more
responsibility and always ready to help when needed. We
congratulate you, Dr. Knox.”
In addition to Davis, members of the Dr. Charles M. Pendley
Founders’ Chair Committee include Joyce Kennamer, Pat Freeman,
and Kathy Cook. Freeman said, “It is a humbling experience to
sit among this elite group of people.” Kennamer asked that
everyone join her in remembering long time committee member,
Virginia Skelton, who passed since the committee last gathered.
“I have on one of Virginia’s pins in honor of her today,” said
Kennamer.
