First “Revel in Rash” Event Held—More to Follow

Northeast Alabama Community College’s English honor society, Sigma Kappa Delta (ΣΚΔ), sponsored its first “Revel in Rash” event Wednesday, February 7, 2007. “Revel in Rash” is a series of meetings where readers gather to review the literary works of award-winning Southern novelist and poet Ron Rash in anticipation of his upcoming visit to NACC. Rash will be the featured author for NACC’s Arts and Humanities Speaker’s Forum March 15, 2007.

Those who attended the session participated in a discussion of Rash’s novels—One Foot in Eden (2002), Saints at the River (2004), and The World Made Straight (2006). The session began with a presentation of the 2003 Ron Rash interview with Dr. Don Noble, host of Bookmark. Presenting the novels were instructors Joan Reeves, Linda Raughton, and Gary Green. “The event exceeded all expectations. I was very pleased with the turnout and discussions,” commented Joan Reeves, English Chair and ΣΚΔ chapter sponsor. Following the discussion, participants were treated to refreshments and door prizes. English instructor Larry Walker and ΣΚΔ member, Ashley Moore, won copies of Rash’s novels.

ΣΚΔ would like to invite everyone to attend the remaining “Revel in Rash” meetings to be held in the Business Education building, room 107 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the following days: February 21 and March 7.

The sessions will culminate with the appearance of Ron Rash at the Arts and Humanities Speaker’s Forum in the Lyceum, March 15 at 11:00 a.m. Copies of Rash’s works may be purchased from ΣΚΔ, and a book-signing will follow in the Lyceum’s lobby at noon. Rash will also make another presentation in the college’s library on March 15 from 6-7 p.m. with another book-signing to follow.

Make plans to attend the next session and discuss the poetry of Ron Rash. For information about the sessions and/or purchasing Rash’s books, please contact Joan Reeves, Chair English and Fine Arts, at 256-638-4418 X347 or reevesj@nacc.edu.
