Fall Class Schedule Will Be Driver-Friendly

Dealing with the high price of gasoline is a challenge throughout Alabama and the nation these days. Personnel at Northeast Alabama Community College have devised a class schedule that they believe will help students driving to campus save on these high prices.

College personnel have created a fall schedule of classes that permits students to attend the college full-time two or three days per week and consequently save on their driving expenses. “The key to this has been to create a very exact and precise schedule that provides the classes that students need in a compact timeframe,” stated Dr. David Campbell, NACC President. “By doing this, most of our students may obtain a full-time schedule of classes either two (Tuesday and Thursday) or three (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) days per week.”

Dr. Joe Burke, NACC Vice President/Dean of Instruction, noted that students may also take online courses through Northeast to add to their class load. “We want to do whatever we can at Northeast to make students’ education here as cost efficient as possible,” Burke stated. “We actually began working on this scheduling concept several semesters ago.”

Administrators and faculty at NACC worked with the college’s Office of Institutional Research to analyze the traditional class schedule. The goal was to create a schedule that permits students to take core courses in each time block without conflicts in subjects. Additionally, more classes were added in the afternoons to permit more choices and options for students and to link the day and evening schedules. “Considering the large number of classes that we offer and the diverse needs of our students, course scheduling of this nature can be a complicated procedure,” Campbell noted. “But our faculty and staff were determined to see this accomplished and they were creative in their work.”

Online registration for the fall semester at Northeast begins July 1, 2008, for current students. Orientation/registration for new students begins July 21, 2008, and is by appointment. Contact the NACC Admissions Office at 256-228-6001 or 256- 638-4418, ext. 222, or go Admissions for more information.

The Summer Semester at NACC already has begun with some 1,400 students having registered. The Summer Semester schedule also was devised with student savings in mind. Most summer classes meet only two days or evenings per week, either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays. This also has proven to be very popular with
students. Campbell added, “Our goal is to schedule classes so that they will be most convenient and accessible for our students. Thanks to the work of our staff, I believe we have created class schedules that accomplishes this goal and is beneficial to our students educationally and financially.”
