Northeast Alabama to Benefit from DOL
Grant
Northeast Alabama Community College is involved in a partnership
that will bring up to $5 million in U.S. Department of Labor
funds to north Alabama and southern Tennessee over the next
three years. The initiative, called Workforce Innovation in
Regional Economic Development (WIRED), was established in 2005
with a competition for grants involving the nation’s governors.
In the most recent round of WIRED announcements, U.S. Secretary
of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced that the North
Alabama/Southern Tennessee WIRED region would receive an initial
award of $500,000, with the ability to access a $4.5 million
balance contingent upon completion of a regional implementation
plan.
Calhoun Community College has led this effort, which includes
Northeast Alabama Community College, Alabama Office of Workforce
Development, Drake State Technical College, Northwest Shoals
Community College, Snead State Community College, Wallace State
Community College-Hanceville, Alabama Industrial Development
Training, the Alabama Technology Network, BizTech, Economic
Development Partnership of Alabama, the Huntsville/Madison
County Chamber of Commerce, Limestone County EDA, Morgan County
EDA, North Alabama International Trade Association, The North
Alabama Region: A Globally Competitive Community (GC2), Port of
Huntsville, South Central Tennessee Development District, South
Central Tennessee Workforce Alliance, the University of Alabama
in Huntsville, the USDA Rural Development, Vanderbilt
University, and Workforce Solutions.
“There are many great things happening across the region,” said
Mike Kennamer, Director of Workforce Development at Northeast
Alabama Community College. “This grant will provide the
resources necessary to foster innovation, communication, and
cooperation across the region.” Kennamer served on the grant
Planning Committee for the partnership.
Focus areas for the initiative include aerospace, advanced
manufacturing, biotechnology, nanotechnology, information
technology, healthcare, and other high demand areas.
Dr. David Campbell, president of Northeast Alabama Community
College stated that he is pleased to partner with Calhoun
Community College on this project. “Our mission as a college
centers on providing and promoting community, social, and
economic improvement for our area. Partnerships like this one
help us to fulfill this aspect of our mission.”
