Criminal Justice Students Visit
Washington, DC and Virginia Tech
Northeast Alabama Community College Criminal Justice students
recently attended the National Peace Officers Memorial Service
for 2007 held in the nation’s Capitol. The students were allowed
to participate in the 19th Annual Candlelight Vigil honoring
those police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
While in Washington DC the students toured the Washington DC
Police Department, visited Ford’s Theater, toured the Spy
Museum, did a night tour of the National Mall area, and toured
the FBI Academy. Students were shown the nation’s Capitol by
Congressman Robert B. Aderholt. Students also viewed the war
memorials and toured Arlington Cemetery.
On the return trip home, the NACC students stopped by Virginia
Tech University to present the Virginia Tech Police Department
with a card showing support of all they did during the recent
tragic events that occurred on the VT campus. The card was
signed by all the students. “After the tragic events that took
place at Virginia Tech the students and I decided that we should
do something to show our support of these men and women of law
enforcement,” said Brent Satterfield, NACC Criminal Justice
Advisor and Instructor.
“We would like to thank Dr. David Campbell, President of
Northeast Alabama Community College, for this trip,” said
Satterfield. “For many of these students it has been a once in a
life time experience. It was truly an honor for my students and
me to have had the opportunity to represent Northeast College
and the North Alabama region at the Law Enforcement Memorial. We
also appreciate Dr. Campbell for allowing us to represent the
College at Virginia Tech. It was very evident how much the
officers at Virginia Tech appreciated our visit,” continued
Satterfield. “I was extremely proud of my students for the
outpouring of support they showed to these officers.”
“We would also like to thank the Fraternal Order of Police of
DeKalb and Jackson Counties for donating to this trip. Thanks
also goes to all those at the college and around the region who
supported us in our fundraiser,” said Satterfield. “In class I
try to explain the ‘brotherhood’ that is shared in law
enforcement, but I think this trip gave students the opportunity
to experience it on a personal level. This is a trip I intend to
continue to do as long as funds are available, and I look
forward to getting the chance to honor my fallen comrades at
every opportunity.”
