Nursing Assistant Training And Certification Begins Next Class in July

The Nursing Assistant program at Northeast Alabama Community College begins Monday, July 14, 2008. The current Nursing Assistant program has been improved and is now using the ProCare Curriculum, which was jointly developed by the American Health Care Association and Interactive Health Network.

Students are trained in a classroom setting with 55 hours of instruction and 20 hours of clinical hands-on experience. The new classroom curriculum is based on lecture and interactive DVDs in which students gain a real-world insight for their future careers. Students who successfully complete 11 weeks of training are eligible to take the state license exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. Program director Rachel Walker states, “The best benefit of the program is the student can take the state certification exam at the college and not have to go out of town to other testing sites.”

There continues to be a huge demand for Certified Nursing Assistants in longterm care and home health careers. According to Julie Cohen, Skills Training Coordinator, “Many students begin jobs before program completion. Instructors are highly trained and enthusiastic about the participants and their ability to begin a new career.”

Training is available in April, July, October, and January. Short-term training for EKG/ Cardiovascular Technician, Spanish for Healthcare, Pharmacy Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician are also available.

Persons interested should contact the Skills Training Coordinator, Julie Cohen at e-mail cohenj@nacc.edu or telephone extension 214 for more information.
