Northeast Jazz Band Members Excel

Two members of the Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) Jazz Band were honored at the Downhome Jazz Festival in Dothan recently. Danielle Knox, vocalist, was named outstanding soloist for the NACC Jazz Band and Andy Curtis, alto saxophonist, was named the outstanding festival soloist.

Danielle Knox participated in the vocal workshop with Venessa Rubin as clinician. Rubin is a vocalist, lyricist, composer, producer and arranger. In January, 2007 she was cited for Outstanding Service to Jazz Education by the International Association of Jazz Educators. She has performed and toured with many of the major jazz artists, including Herbie Hancock, Lionel Hampton, the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Jazz Crusaders and the Mercer Ellington Orchestra.


The Northeast Jazz Band, under the direction of Dr. Daniel C. Knox, earned all superior scores for their performance at the festival. The adjudicators were as follows: Dr. David Baesel, Professor of Music, Barry College; Dr. James G. Choate, United States Army Band, retired; and Robert G. Bean, Chair of Music Department, Wallace College.

Other recent performances by the NACC Jazz Band have included the Jazz Hall of Fame Festival in Birmingham, where they received the Band of Distinction Award and their 16th appearance at the Panoply Arts Festival in Huntsville.
