Arts and Humanities Speaker’s Forum To
Feature Darnell Arnoult
Northeast Alabama Community College will hold its annual Arts
and Humanities Speaker’s Forum on Thursday, April 7, 2011, at
10:00 am in the Tom Bevill Lyceum. This year’s guest speaker is
writer Darnell Arnoult. Following Arnoult’s presentation and
reading, she will sign books in the lobby of the Lyceum. Arnoult
is the author of a book of poetry entitled What Travels with
Us (2005) and the novel Sufficient Grace (2006).
Arnoult received the 2009 Margaret Hobson Prize in Arts and
Letters from Chowan University and was named 2007 Tennessee
Writer of the Year by the Tennessee Writers Alliance. Her poetry
collection was named the 2006 SIBA Poetry Book of the Year and
was awarded a 2005 Weatherford Award in Appalachian Literature
from the Appalachian Studies Association and Berea College.
Arnoult was born and raised in Henry County, Virginia. She lived
for twenty years in Chapel Hill and Durham, North Carolina,
where she received a BA in American Studies from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MA in English and
Creative Writing from North Carolina State University and worked
at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Her
fiction and poetry have been published in a variety of journals,
and she has taught creative writing to adults for over fifteen
years. Recently she joined the faculty of Lincoln Memorial
University as Writer-in-Residence, a position previously held by
last year’s guest author, Silas House.
Arnoult is committed to public and
community arts and humanities education and programming, and
with over seventeen years of teaching experience in creative
writing and creative practice, she is a regular faculty member
of the Duke Writers Workshop, now called the Table Rock Writers
Workshop, Tennessee Young Writers Workshop, John C. Campbell
Folk School, and the Appalachian Writers Workshop at Hindman
Settlement School. Arnoult participates in many other events
that foster a love for writing and reading across the South.
In addition to Arnoult’s presentation and book signing in the
Tom Bevill Lyceum at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 7, Arnoult will
be interviewed for the Alabama Public Television series
Bookmark. Dr. Don Noble, host of the award-winning series,
will conduct the interview in the college’s library. Arnoult
will return to campus to speak in the college’s library at 6:00
Thursday evening, April 7. The evening session will be held on
the second floor of the library.
Copies of Sufficient Grace and What Travels with Us
will be available for purchase in the lobby of the Lyceum. The
public is invited to attend these lectures. Anyone having
